Date: December 11, 2019

Guest: H.E. Ernest Bai Koroma

Podcast: In this episode, H.E. Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, shares on his leadership journey, the challenges he encountered along the way, and his work on the continent after his presidency.

H.E. Ernest Bai Koroma

FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE

H.E. Ernest Bai Koroma served as the fourth President of the Republic of Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018. During his presidency, the country became the fastest growing economy in Africa in 2014 before the deadly Ebola epidemic. In the same year, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, while at Joint Press Conference with H.E. Koroma on March 05th, noted that Sierra Leone represents one of the world’s most successful cases of post-conflict recovery, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. By 2018, the country became the third most peaceful in Africa.

H.E. Koroma demonstrated strong and unifying leadership in rebuilding the country, improving economic stability, fighting corruption, implementing reforms, and strengthening good governance, which attracted international attention and praises.

His legacy for the people of Sierra Leone covers the consolidation of peace, a massive rebuilding of roads, pipe borne water and energy infrastructure, which were severely destroyed during the civil war.

In April 2018, H.E. Koroma handed over power peacefully to an opposition party following a democratic election. Since then, he has been dedicating a good portion of his retirement to advocate for issues that are fundamental to peace, environmental conservation, as well as women and youth empowerment.
