UONGOZI Institute in collaboration with the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) and United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) will convene a dialogue on 19 June 2021, in Dar es Salaam, to discuss ways that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) can maximise opportunities associated with Special Economic Zone (SEZ) investments. The dialogue will be officiated by the Minister for Industry and Trade, Hon. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo (MP). Representatives from government ministries, departments and agencies; LGAs; SMEs; private sector; and research and academic institutions will be in attendance.

Specifically, it will:

  1. Share knowledge about the type of business activities and investments undertaken in the SEZ schemes.
  2. Explore potential and existing opportunities associated with SEZ investments.
  3. Discuss challenges that debilitate linkages between SEZ investments and the local economy.

The recommendations from the dialogue will enrich the framework and modalities to promote SMEs for socio-economic growth.
